Submitting Samples for Analysis

Download/Print the Analysis Request Sheet

Complete the proper Analysis Request Sheet (listed below) to tell us what types of analyses you would like, as well as reporting and billing information (the ‘Job#’ at the upper right corner of the form is assigned by the lab).

Please be sure that you provide enough sample material for the types of analyses you require, and that the sample containers are clearly labeled.   In identifying samples on our analytical reports, we have a limit of 9 characters for each sample ID, so we will abbreviate sample IDs to this length if necessary. Sample IDs MUST be unique within each group.  If you need longer IDs on your report for clarity, please provide us with an electronic (disk or email) list of the samples with a 9-character-or-less ID and a longer ID (up to 65 characters in length) for each sample. The preferred format for this type of list is a CSV file, which most applications can export.

If you would like to receive your analytical data in a format other than a paper report (e.g. email), please be sure to indicate your preference on the Analysis Request Sheet.

Submit Samples

Enclose the information sheet and submit samples:

  • We are no longer accepting in-person deliveries.  (Please Contact Us ahead of time to arrange sample tranfser.)
  • By mail to Research Analytical Laboratory, University of Minnesota, Rm. 135 Crops Research Bldg., 1902 Dudlley Ave., St Paul,  MN  55108-6089

** NEW: Frozen Soil Statement **

Processing of frozen soil is prohibitively time consuming and expensive.  Please make every effort to submit your soil samples in a “field moist” or air-dried condition.  (Refrigeration is recommended for temporary storage of “field moist” samples.)  Working with frozen samples simply takes too long for us to deliver results in the timely fashion you have come to expect from us.  If you must submit frozen soil samples, please limit the number to five or less.  Beyond that, we will be adding a significant charge for processing, effective immediately.  Thank you for your cooperation.

New Customers or Unusual Types of Samples

It is strongly recommended that you contact the laboratory to discuss your analytical needs before sending or bringing samples in.

Costs for testing are listed on the individual Request Sheets.  Payment can be by EFS account number for University of Minnesota customers or we will invoice according to your requirements (often with reference to a purchase order number). Prepayment by check can also be arranged. We also accept credit cards from the following providers, VISA, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners Club International and JCB.

GOVERNMENT entities: please read our Purchase Authorization Requirements letter (PDF icon purchase_authorization_requirements.pdf) before submitting samples!
